Early Years

Mathematics for Classes 2 to 5: the four operations, number systems, integers, first algebra and fractions.

Early Years is the first of our three programmes. It covers what the rest of school mathematics is built on. That means the four operations, the number system and integers, then the first steps into algebra, simple equations and fractions.

The order matters. A child fluent in the four operations can meet negative numbers without being unsettled. A child comfortable with integers can accept a letter standing for a number, then solve a simple equation. Fractions come last, because they ask for all of it at once.

The aim is understanding before speed. A child should be able to say why a step works, not only that it gave the right answer.

Who is this for?

This is for a child in Classes 2 to 5 who is meeting the four operations, the number system and their first negative numbers. It suits the child who works slowly and makes slips. It suits equally the child who answers quickly but cannot yet say why the answer is right. If fractions or the first letters of algebra are coming next at school, this is where the ground is prepared.

What students learn

Add, subtract, multiply and divide accurately, and choose the operation a problem needs.
Read and write large numbers, and explain what each digit is worth.
Place positive and negative numbers in order on a number line.
Add and subtract integers without losing track of the sign.
Use a letter to stand for a number that is not yet known.
Solve a simple equation, then check it by putting the answer back in.
Compare and order fractions, and see when two of them are equal.
Say aloud why a step was taken, not only what the answer is.

By the end of this programme

Work with whole numbers and integers, signs included, without checking every step.
Turn a short worded problem into a simple equation and solve it.
Compare and order fractions and rational numbers.
Read a simple algebraic expression and say what it means.
Show, from regular assessment, which topics are secure and which are not.

How the programme runs

Classes run live online over Zoom, in batches of up to ten students, and in person at our Poranki centre.

At this age a small misunderstanding hides well. A child unsure about place value, or about what a minus sign does, can carry that quietly for months and still get many answers right. A batch of ten online is small enough for a teacher to notice it.

Practice at home

Short practice between classes, on the chapter being studied. Ten minutes most days does more for a child of this age than an hour once a week. The practice quizzes and maths games on this site are there for that.
